What about the “tunnels” ?

The island of Vis was a restricted military area during the Yugoslavian era. Although civilians have always lived on the island also during this time.

On the opposite side of the bay is an old remnant from the Yugoslavian era: the “Jastog” submarine tunnel.

The tunnel was built around 1982 by the Yugoslavian army. The tunnel was intended to provide boats and submarines with protection from air attacks in the event of war, as it was completely hewn out of the rock. The tunnel is approx. 125m long and the highest point is approx. 18m above the waterline. Shortly before the disintegration of Yugoslavia, the island of Vis was demilitarized. So 7 years after this boat tunnel was completed….

There are various underground tunnels all over the island, which were also built during the Yugoslavian era. Today there are various guided tours (Military Tours) from various providers where you can explore the interior of these facilities.
We advise against entering these underground facilities on your own.
